Out of the Whirlwind

We enter the scene in Job. No question Job suffered tragedy, more than most of us could bear. He lost his ten children, his home, and his livelihood. Eventually, he loses his good health as well. As expected, Job’s emotions are all over the place. He professes his faith in God, he knows his Redeemer lives (Job 19:25), complains to God (Job 21:4) and wonders why the wicked prosper and live long lives (Job 21:7) and he thinks God isn’t even watching or listening (Job 30:20).
God watched every heartbreak, heard every cry and kept every tear. After 38 chapters of silence, God shows up. Out of the whirlwind the Lord answers Job.
The Lord answers Job out of the whirlwind… Job 38:1
2 Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?
4 Were you there when I laid the foundations of the earth?
8 Who kept the sea inside its boundaries?
12 Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn in the east?
21 Can you direct the movement of the stars?
36 Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind?
37 Who is wise enough to count all the clouds?

God asks Job again, “Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job 40:2 God never does tell Job why the misfortune occurred; He only makes it clear He is in charge.
It is a fact everything under heaven and on earth is His, including the Leviathan that sneezes flashing light with eyes of red dawn and smoke that streams from his nostrils. Nothing on earth is this creature’s equal. Job 41:33. Job wisely replies with a testament of faith to the Almighty, “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you…I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me.” Job quits arguing with God.
Here are the truths that we note in this passage:
⦁ Job suffers unspeakable tragedy out of the blue. He wasn’t expecting it and even though he had strong faith and knew the Lord, it was a difficult journey.
⦁ What is your difficult journey today? Know you aren’t alone.
⦁ Job wonders “why” and thinks God does not care…which could not be farther from the truth.
⦁ God knew and cared. He wept with Job.
⦁ God is the Almighty, the Alpha & Omega, the Beginning and the End. He is bigger, stronger, smarter than all of us…and He does not have to explain Himself to us.
⦁ He loves us. That is all we need to know.
⦁ If the God of the universe that one that gives the sea it’s boundaries, tells the stars to orbit and directs the rising of the sun …and He still loves me enough to give me intuition, intellect and wisdom.
⦁ He blesses me through heartache.
⦁ God is God-He is in charge, we are not. If He counts the clouds, He can handle the chaos in my life.
⦁ He has big, big shoulders.
⦁ He is bigger, stronger, higher, faster, wiser and more loving than I could ever imagine. He knows me better than I know myself. He provides a way for me to spend eternity with Him as He sacrificed His Son for me.
I’ll think of that the next time my car has a flat, the pipe breaks, or the news is the worst. God will be the Lord of my life-big and small-and He shows up out of the whirlwind in your life and mine… at just the right moment. I believe it. I know it.
The sun shines today, the clouds dot the sky, and the oceans sit within their banks. My God is in charge. Today is a good day.
