Highway driving is an experience in skill, patience, and endurance. The way the driver copes with tedium and the unexpected tells alot about the personality of the one behind the wheel. Think of road trips gone past. Sometimes it is fun to rock out on tunes, other times the news of the day is best. Interesting podcasts or audio books fill the time in solitude or quiet listening. Others prefer conversations to keep them attentive and alert. Entertainment, enlightenment and engagement all cut through the monotony of the road. As the miles tick forth, we seek some sort of respite.Isaiah 35:8 says, “And a great road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway to Holiness. Evil-minded people will never travel on it. It will be for those who walk in God’s ways; fools will never walk there. Lions will not lurk along its course, nor any ferocious beasts. There will be no other dangers. Only the redeemed will walk on it. Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return. They will enter Jerusalem singing crowned with everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness. This is the road I want to be on. Not by my own doing at all… paid for by the blood of Jesus, I will be on this road. So grateful for the blood of Jesus and all he has done for me… I have no choice but to sing on the way. It is only in his kingdom do we find contentment and peace. It is Him that wipes away every tear from our eyes. It is Jesus that provide us wonder and amazement forever and ever. Until we get to the end of our journey, what kind of traveler are you?
Are you an antsy driver checking the time, route and plans every few minutes?
What kind of passenger are you on long trips? Are you better at the wheel in
control or content in the backseat with gadgets and toys?
Do you like new places or the predictable few where there are no surprises along
the route?
The funny thing is that no matter how much we plan, prepare, or adjust there are many times when we cannot anticipate what is around the next bend. Even with the best of maps, apps or guidance tools, disaster can be unavoidable and unpredictable. Know this as you head out on your summer trips. Remember to plan as best you can; knowing that tough stuff happens along the way. When the worst of the worst happens; a crash, a delay or long back up, remember it could always be worse, God knows what is next and He will be there every step of the way. He has paid the price for your trip back to Jerusalem. He knows where you are headed. Do you? Remember the big picture and destination He has planned for you is worth it. No texting and driving, and no stupid last-minute calculations. He’s got this. He’s got you. Have a great summer and remember where you are headed. The trip may be long and tedious or just plain boring. It’s okay. It will all be worth it in the end. What a reunion that will be with so many loved ones and friends.
